On Friday, House Republicans endorsed a balanced approach to the “fiscal cliff” as President Barack Obama has called for to avoid automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that are due to take effect on Jan. 1.
On Saturday, House Speaker John Boehner laid out his own approach, based on what he called the “four corners” of the budget deal that Obama and Republicans agreed to on Nov. 21:
No tax hikes on middle-class taxpayers.
No spending cuts beyond those that had already been agreed to, nor a new round of cuts.
In exchange, the package would eliminate the budget caps for military spending and domestic spending, as well as other reforms aimed at reducing the deficit.
As Boehner put it: “The question is: Are the American people ready to vote to raise taxes, spend more, and continue the spending binge in Washington that has turned our children’s future into a growing, debt-ridden albatross around our necks?”
If Democrats had their way, the answer would be “yes.” But for now, they have yet to agree to the kind of balanced approach that Boehner envisions.
