It is a common practice in various culinary arts to employ cooking devices for preparing various food items and beverages. It is known to employ cooking devices wherein various food items are cooked by timed cooking cycles during which the heating elements are energized at predetermined times. For example, it is known to provide a cooking device wherein food items may be prepared for various purposes and then packaged for future consumption, e.g. hamburgers, pizzas, etc. The cooking devices employed for such operations typically employ a cooking element comprising a heating element and means for actuating the element at the desired time for the preparation of a given food item. Such devices typically comprise a cooking surface over which the food item is disposed and wherein the heating element is in an exposed, operative position.
During the operation of cooking devices having a hot cooking surface, the heating element, having been exposed to the exterior environment, is susceptible to damage from sources of shock, such as drops on the device, placement of the device on an unstable support, as by placement of the device on an unstable surface, handling during the packaging of the food items, etc.
It is known to provide covers for cooking devices which define a cavity in which food items are positioned and the covers are adapted for movement over the heating element to protect the heating element during the cooking operation.
